Interview & Challenge

SRT Marine produce maritime domain awareness ( MDA) technology which monitors, communicates, and facilitates navigation safety for shipping globally. As part of my second interview I was asked to solve the following brief:

The coastguard of a developing country needs to monitor vessels in their coastal waters. Environmentally sensitive regions of their waters are protected, and large vessels are restricted from sailing in those areas.

The coast guard needs to take action if vessels penetrate these regions. The priority of the action is linked to sensitivity in the region and scale of the vessels. The coastguard's performance is also measured annually against targets to reduce incursions into protected areas.

Present a solution that SRT can develop to help the coastguard complete their mission.

Ideation

What are the key elements of the brief?

  1. Developing country
  2. Sensitive regions
  3. Vessel size
  4. Priority of action
  5. Performance

These points are central to the problem solving and need to be kept in mind throughout the process.

Wireframes

Keeping in mind the key elements of the brief, I believed it was important to create a flow which displayed the procedure a coastguard may take in order to monitor and log a violating vessel.

Hi Fidelity UI's

It was important to me that I presented high fidelity interfaces which visualised my concept with greater accuracy. SRT were already using dark mode ui's and given nature of the content, I thought it prudent to continue this theme.

Outcomes

I had reached the last three candidates, which is an achievement in this competitive market, nevertheless the employer felt another candidate was more suitable for the role. I never have any argument with such a decision and always wish both parties success. It is important that the prospective employer and myself are a good fit, which is not always the case when applying.  However It is always an opportunity to talk with new people and show what I can do. For this I am always grateful.
